  1. Consider the location – If you know the location and time of your wedding, it will help you to plan and focus on your search. If you are having a daytime ceremony on the beach, you can rule out ball gowns with long trains and dramatic embellishments. The same goes if you are getting married in a candlelit cathedral. Here, you need to avoid short slip dresses or anything that looks like you will are going to a cocktail party. Most of the fabrics used for wedding gowns are suitable year round. However, some such as linen and organza are more appropriate for the warm weather while velvet and linen are best left for the winters.
  1. Plan early – Of course you need to plan for your shopping six to nine months earlier. You will be surprised to find out that a manufacturer takes about four months to make a dress and yet another two months to finish with the same. If you want elaborate one, it will take longer. However, if you are short on time, many a shop do rush orders for an additional fee but your choices will likely be limited Not only that, they also have a sale section with samples where you can buy off the rack. If you are lucky enough, you will find something that requires minor alterations.
  1. Think about a back-up – Take anything you know you want to wear on your wedding day such as a necklace or your mother’s veil. Wedding gown boutiques often provides with bustier, shoes and other lingerie especially strapless bras, however you might want to bring your own. You will also need the advice of a few trusted confidantes but avoid taking the same from too many of them. If your entourage is an opionated one, it can be very confusing as well as frustrating. Try to invite one or two people who know or can appreciate your taste but at the same time be honest with you and whose judgement you can depend on.
  1. Keep an open mind – This is the idea that bridal consultants keep on repeating over and over again. Therefore, there is nothing wrong in taking their advice, even if they urge on you to try on which doesn’t suit your style. You will be surprised to know some dresses don’t look much attractive on the hanger but looks great once put on. On the other hand, never be fooled into purchasing something that you do not like at all.

To conclude, it is imperative to choose a formal dress or a prom dress  that feels like it is made for you and no one else. Many a bride purchase a prom dress that everyone forces her too but in the end is not happy about it and feels miserable in it. So, avoid this mistake and search it over again if the need arises.
